Deciphering the DNA of the Steintor
After the intention to build over part of the Steintorplatz was shelved due to public protests, the Council of the State Capital Hannover (LLH) decided to initiate a comprehensive participation process concerning the future of the Steintor. Urban Catalyst supported the LHH’s initiative by providing project coordination, organisation, mediation and the evaluation of the on-site actions. The result is the Steintor DNA project: it maps the ideas and concerns of the citizens about the future of the Steintor and constitutes the basis for what will be a subsequent planning competition (June 2019 onwards) in which the results of the participation process are to be translated into design proposals that can then be publicly discussed further.
The overall process was structured through the project phases “exploration”, “testing” and “evaluation”. With public-square safaris and topic evenings (exploration), a large-scale on-site action week (testing) and two concluding forums (evaluation), Urban Catalyst developed the Steintor DNA project step-by-step in close collaboration with all the participants. Further products on the path to the Steintor DNA were two online dialogues (together with zebralog, Berlin) and two issues of a newspaper, the Steintor Zeitung(with the offices hardy seiler and endboss, both in Hannover).
