With these space-ventures (Raumunternehmen) a new type of city- and country-activists is emerging: autonomous space and project developers, who step by step acquire abandoned sites, establish specific user mixes and networks and employ clever financial strategies to develop long term perspectives.

Raumunternehmen are creating test sites for the pressing issues of the future city.This involves new models for participation and community, the cooperation between civil society and state, re-localisation and sustainable economic activity.

Describing six practical case studies, the book presents spatial strategies, development paths and alternative value-added concepts employed by Raumunternehmen, while embedding these insights into the current discourse about user-supported urban development.
